Coach Richard Wells was appointed as Athletic Director of the Los Angeles Trade Technical College Athletics Department in November 2015. He has been a coach and faculty member here at LATTC since 1979. He earned his BA in Sociology from Whittier College and his Master’s in Education from Azusa Pacific University. Before becoming a head coach he served as a Career Advisor and Assistant Basketball coach. Coach Wells is currently the head coach of the Men’s Basketball team. Coach Wells is also a professor of Health and Kinesiology. He is currently the President of the LATTC Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA) local chapter. He is also an UMOJA Community Mentor.
Coach Wells volunteered for the National Youth Sports for disadvantaged youth from 1987-1992. He was named Southern California Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Coach of the year in 1992 and 1994. He received a Service Award in 2000 for the Los Angeles Metro Special Olympics. In 2008 he was chosen as California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year. For three years running 2006-2008 he received the South Coast Conference Coach of the Year award. Coach Wells was inducted into the Whittier College Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1968-69 Poet Basketball as being one of the greatest in Whittier College history.
He led his LAATC Men’s Basketball team to win the South Coast Championships 2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2008-2009. His team also won the Southern California Regional Championship in 2008. In 2008 the team made their first Commission on Athletics Tournament appearance since 1992 where they advanced to the Final Four.
